HTC’s Butterfly, the droid with the 5″ 1080p screen, started off in Japan, moved to the US and has now finally gone international. It keeps the same cool specs as the country-specific versions, including the high-res S-LCD3 and the Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset.
But instead of telling you about it, it’s easier to show it with this video ad for the HTC Butterfly.
See? HTC is living up to its “Quietly brilliant” slogan and subtly tells you about the Butterfly’s burst shot capabilities, wireless TV out and face recognition. The ad also shows the phone is splash resistant, which is true for the Japanese version (the J Butterfly), but the specs of the international version make no mention of this.
We’ve heard already the rumor of a 1080p Super AMOLED display from Samsung, but the new chatter adds more details to the story – a 4.99-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080p resolution and a staggering 441ppi pixel density.
The first phones to use a 5-inch 1080p display are already available in some markets, but they rely on LCDs. The new display from Samsung is, of course, rumored to be used in the Galaxy S IV. What the gossip doesn’t say is whether the display will use a PenTile or an RGB matrix. At this pixel density it might not make much difference but we’ll see.
Anyway, the 5-inch 1080p Super AMOLEDs will supposedly go into production in Q1 of next year. This would be just in time for a Q2 launch (all three Galaxy S flagships launched in Q2).
Whether this rumor pans out or not, 2013 will be the year of 5-inch 1080p screens. HTC already started and so did Sharp, Sony (through Japan Display Inc) and LG are also reportedly working on smartphones with such units.

The HTC J Butterfly, world first 5-inch 1080p Full HD display-packing, has now a promo video, this monster of a smartphone is exclusive for the Japanese carrier AU/KDDI for the time being.
The ad focus on the 1080p display in question, Here goes the video itself.
KDDI has unveiled the HTC J Butterfly (HTL21) in Japan and it is the first production smartphone to have a 1080p display.
The HTC J Butterfly has : 5.0-inch, Super LCD3 display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080, which gives it a pixel density of the astonishing 440 ppi. The display is quite big but at 143 x 71 x 9.1 mm, the J butterfly is only slightly bigger than the One X (134.4 x 69.9 x 8.9 mm) and at 140g weighs just 10g more.
Under the hood of the HTC J butterfly, you have a quad-core Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz with 2GB of RAM. It has 16GB internal storage, microSDHC expansion.
On the back is an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video recording and on frontal 2 megapixel camera. The smartphone supports 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 (LE), NFC, LTE and CDMA/GSM/UMTS/GPRS radios, and the phone is dust and waterproof (IPX5). Strangely, for a phone with such specs, the battery is only 2,020mAh.
Finally, the HTC J Butterfly will ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box.
The HTC J butterfly is set to release in Japan on AU/KDDI in December. The phone will be sold in three colors: red, black and white.
