Sony just come to announce a brand new tablet in Japan the Xperia Tablet Z. This new tablet is 6.9mm thick and weighs 495g, which makes it the world’s thinnest and lightest 10-inch Android tablet on the market, and even thinner than the Toshiba Excite 10 LE that was once the champion in both fields, and even smaller tablets such as the iPad mini.
The Xperia Tablet Z has a 10.1-inch, 1920 x 1200 resolution ‘Reality Display’ powered by Mobile Bravia Engine 2. The design language of the tablet is similar to the recent Sony Xperia handsets, such as the Xperia Z. Also, just like the Xperia Z, the Xperia Tablet Z happens to be dust and water resistant.
Other specs : on the back of the Xperia Tablet Z is an 8 megapixel Exmor R camera with backlit CMOS sensor. Under the hood, the Xperia Tablet Z is powered by a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8064 processor, refreshed by 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage space expandable with microSD card, NFC, LTE and Sony’s S-Force virtual 3D surround sound technology.
The Sony Xperia Tablet Z will be sold in black and white. Right now there’s no word on the pricing and availability.
Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL will reach the shores of Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Malaysia before the end of Q1 and is very likely to be launched in other regions shortly after.
The Xperia Z will be made available in Black, White and Purple color variants, while the Xperia ZL will be up for grabs in Black and White versions. The device package is said to contain Sony MH-EX300AP headset, charger, micro USB cable for charging, synchronization, file transfer and user documentation.
However, there is no officially confirmation on the pricing of these devices in the region just yet.
Sony made a real deal with their Xperia Z and ZL announcement at CES this year.
Besides the 5-inch 1080p screen, the Xperia Z features a 13MP camera with an Exmor RS sensor, which is supposedly improved over last year’s Exmor R lineup. There is also a built-in real-time HDR mode for shooting video, which sounds intriguing, to say the least.
Here’s some camera samples and also a HDR video taken by the Xperia Z :
Back to yesterday we brought you a report that the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL will be joining forces to tackle the competition in Canada.
Today, courtesy of Sony Xperia CA, comes a confirmation that the Xperia ZL will be Canada-bound, which is great news for those who fancy it over the more slender Xperia Z.
It looks that earlier infos that the Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL aren’t going to share markets was wrong – Sony Mobile’s Twitter account posted a message saying that both Xperia Z an ZL will be available in Canada.
Both Android phones have some differences, you can check out it here Z and ZL for the full details.
Anyway, it’s a good thing that Sony giving users oppurtunity to choose which model they want.
Worldwide launch plans are still not officially announced yet, so it’s unclear if other regions like mainland Europe, the UK and Australia (all of which are slated to get the Xperia Z) will have such a choice.
Both Android phones were announced during CES and they share a lot of their specs, including screen and chipset. The Xperia Z is thin (7.9mm) and waterproof, but has a larger footprint (139 x 71mm), while the Xperia ZL is not water-proof and is thicker (9.8mm), but it’s smaller (131.6 x 69.3).
Sony is working on a high-end Android smartphone, ready to take on the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy SIII. Best of all, the company will have it on display at CES and MWC next year.
“In the near future we’ll finish a flagship model, which will be able to compete with Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S III,” said Dennis van Schie, CVP, Head of Sales and Marketing for Sony Mobile Communications in conversation with Financial Times Deutschland.
Additionally, a spokesperson for Sony has also suggested that this flagship model would be available on display at CES in Las Vegas and at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona early next year.
According to Van Schie, currently, Sony doesn’t have any plans to release a Windows Phone device and the company will focus all of its mobile efforts on Android.
There are several rumored Sony phones and the only one that fits the description of a true iPhone/Galaxy S III competitor is the Sony C660X ‘Yuga’. It’s supposed to run on a quad-core Krait CPU, have a 13MP camera, and enjoy a 5-inch 1080p display. Of course, you can never know with these things as some rumors suggest an Xperia C650x Odin will be the company’s flagship for next year.
“We will unveil new tablets besides our existing Xperia S tablet, but not many,” Van Schie also shared. The reason for that is the cut-throat price competition in this segment. “It has become very difficult to make money with tablets.”

An purported live photo of Sony Xperia C650X Odin has emerged, thus giving us a glimpse of the next upcoming Android flagship by the tech giant’s (Sony). The device has previously made an appearance in a leaked user agent profile.
The alleged photo of the device doesn’t reveal much, save for its large, almost frameless, rumored 5-inch 1080p display, tucked in what appears to be a metal-clad body. The rest of the handset’s alleged specifications include quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset and 2GB of RAM.
Rumor has it that the Sony Xperia C650X Odin will likely break cover during CES 2013 in Las Vegas this coming January. Such on occurrence makes quite a bit of sense as we saw the Sony Xperia S and Xperia ion go official during the same industry event this year.
