After a load of rumors, Square Enix has held it’s press conference where had unveiled the next mainline entry in arguably the most popular game series of all time in Japan has just been officially announced. Dragon Quest XI is coming to both the PlayStation 4 and the 3DS, according to a live broadcast currently underway in Japan, with a release date targeted for next year.
“Additionally, we are also considering launching on Nintendo’s in development NX platform,” Square Enix said in a press release.
Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time Coming to multi platforme
The PlayStation 4 version is being developed internally at Square Enix, and will use the Unreal Engine 4. The 3DS version, meanwhile, is like two games in one — it runs in full 3D on the top screen and uses retro 2D sprites on the bottom. Oddly, Square Enix also announced a version for NX, the upcoming Nintendo system that we know basically nothing about.
Dragon Quest XI is directed by Takeshi Uchikawa and produced by Yosuke Saito with music by Koichi Sugiyama. Both the PlayStation 4 and 3DS versions share the same story, but differ in visuals and partially in development teams.
This will be the first traditional numbered Dragon Quest game to hit a home console in some time. Dragon Quest VIII for the PlayStation 2 was a massive hit in 2004, but follow-up IX surprised many when it was announced as a Nintendo DS release, and X is an MMO for the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. The series has a long history with both Nintendo and Sony, bouncing between the two as their popularity rises and falls, so for this release Square Enix will get to have it both ways.
- PlayStation 4 Version
- The core development staff consists of a team at Square Enix. Because of the high amount of resources required to make the game, Square Enix is working with Orca on development. It’s being made on Unreal Engine 4.
- 3DS Version
- The same core staff making the PlayStation 4 version is working on the 3DS version, with help from Toylogic.
You’ll be able to switch between 3D and 2D graphics as you play.
Square Enix is aiming to release Dragon Quest XI within the series’ 30th anniversary year. (The first game launched for Famicom on May 27, 1986.)
